De-icing in domestic and commercial refrigerators

Modern refrigerators have electronic temperature controllers that, from time to time, turn off the compressor and activate a resistor to electrically defrost. Depending on the characteristics of the refrigerator, the melting of all layers of ice in the evaporator can take from 10 to 30 minutes. The defrost will only end when the temperature sensor installed in the evaporator reaches the desired point or the controller indicates a maximum defrost time (also known as timeout), which may not be ideal, as there will be a certain amount of ice that can block the system in the medium term.

If a resistor is energized for an excessive time, plastic components of the refrigerator can melt and burn, and in extreme cases, even a fire. Therefore, it is necessary to add a thermal protector that turns off the resistance if the temperature exceeds a safe limit. This thermal protector is installed close to the evaporator tubes or close to the defrost heater.

Emicol, leader in the manufacture of components for laundry, refrigeration and cooking, is the only manufacturer in South America of this type of technology, with the possibility of producing 3/4″ or 1/2″ sealed bimetallic protectors. These protectors can be easily installed in 5/16” or 3/8” tubes, ensuring complete safety for the refrigerator.

Among Emicol's wide range of bimetallic thermostats, we highlight the T 17 and T 60 protectors.

The T 17 protectors have a tinned copper body and a 1/2” bimetallic disc, making the product highly sensitive and accurate. The T 60, mounted on an engineering polymer body, has an interesting cost benefit for domestic applications. Both protector models are UL certified.

We emphasize that all Emicol safety thermostats can be set to the desired opening and closing temperature. Emicol can produce a suitable solution for the customer, considering temperature, type of connectors and cable size.
